Quick Cabbage Kootu

Life is going on , with a simple routine now. Nothing has changed in the weather though. We got used to it now. Hoping to see some sunshine, in coming weeks. The weather channels, shows some positive signs. Yes , no more negative farenhiets. Spring is around the corner. Still waiting for our shipment. When it arrives, will start cooking and clicking in full swing. This post was in my draft for so long. These pictures were taken using my old P&S camera.

Cabbage is a very apt vegetable for curry or kootu. As it has a uniue texture, which blends with the dal.  This kootu is very simple to make with less ingredients. Kootu goes well with any side dish. Here I have given a less specier version. You can alter the spices according to your taste.

Ingredients:

1.Cabbage                         -           1 cup (chopped)
2.Moong dal                      -           3/4 cup
3.Red chillies                     -           3
4.Green chilly                    -            1
5.Oil                                   -            2 tbsp
6.Mustard seeds                 -             1/2 tsp
7.Urad dal                          -              1/2 tsp
8.Curry leaves                    -              handfull
9.salt                                   -              as needed
10.Water                             -               as needed
11.Turmeric powder           -              1/4 tsp

For grinding:

1.Coconut pieces      -         3
2.Coriander seeds     -         1 tsp
3.Pepper corns          -          1/2 tsp
4.Cumin seeds          -           1/2 tsp

Method:
* Take a pan, add washed moon dal . Cook with little turmeric powder, till it is soft. This may take around 10 minutes, its worth for a tasty kootu.Don't cook moong dal in pressure cooker, then it will become mushy.
* Grind the ingredients ,given under "grinding". This should be very nice paste.

* Chop cabbage finely. Add it to the pan and cook it with the dal. If you want, we can add some water. But cabbage will leave out some water. So be  carefull in adding water.

* Once cabbage is fully cooked, add the grinded paste to the pan and mix it. Adjust salt to it. Keep the flame in medium low. Cover the pan, if needed.
* In a separate pan, add oil and temper with mustard seeds, urad dal, curry leaves, red chillies and green chilly.
 * Add directly to the cooked dal and cabbage. Garnish with cilantro.
